This year’s Prague Bollywood Festival is proud to introduce Numafung, a Nepali film, into
Czech cinemas Aero and Svetozor. Numafung tells the story of a young girl repeatedly exploited
in the name of culture and tradition, and who eventually stands up against the system. Directed by
Nabin Subba, a director known for his critical stance towards Bollywood in Nepal, this film
explores those dimensions of Nepali societies that support exploitation while stressing the
possibilities of resistance and change.
Subba’s film work grows out of an intersection of journalism and theater. Raised in Hong Kong,
pursued a professional career in Nepal where he became active as both a journalist, theater critic
and theater director. His film Numafung received several awards including the Best film of
1998-2002 Nepal National Award (2005) and the Public Choice Award at the Vesoul
International film festival in France (2003) and is one of the first Nepali films to receive
international visibility. He is a member of the national federation of journalists and the president
of the international department of the Nepal Producer association and also serves as the executive
member of the South Asian media commission. He currently splits his time between directing
Dolan, a TV serial, and working on his next feature film.
Numafung screens at Kino Aero October 11. At 8:30pm and Kino Světozor (small theater)
October 15 at 4:30pm
The film’s director has also been invited to attend the film’s premiere in the Czech Republic.
